What Really Attracts Bats?

Whenever bats are out and about they are generally looking for food, water or shelter. Since they eat lots of bugs, their food can be found almost anywhere. A lot of flying insects congregate around outdoor lighting at night and that will draw hungry bats. There are some species of bats that feed on nectar and flowering agaves are a favorite source. Nectar feeding bats will also be attracted to a quick and easy meal from the hummingbird feeder on your back porch. For water, any pool, pond, lake or stream will work as long as there’s enough room for skimming the surface.

It can be a little unnerving when bats are flying around close by, but they generally aren’t a real problem. Unless they find suitable shelter at your home or business, that is. That’s when the real problem begins. What attracts bats besides food and water? A safe place to sleep and raise a family, just like all critters. A 1/16th of an inch bump under the eaves will work for hanging around. They can get into openings in your walls or attic as small as 3/8 of an inch. Anything dark and private will do. If they do set up house, you need an effective bat proofing plan to remedy the situation ASAP.
