Having solar panels installed on the roof of your home or business has never been easier. Solar panels are popping up everywhere – and for good reason. Between the energy savings, the boost in property value and the different rebates and tax incentives available from the government, it can add up to a pretty nice windfall. And you’re helping to save the environment, too! That’s right: if pigeons are living under your solar panels, you and your family and/or co-workers are breathing their feces. All day, every day. Since pigeon feces is known to harbor many different parasites and diseases, that ain’t a good thing.
If that’s not enough, wait – there’s more! Did I mention that nothing poops like a pigeon? Their feces is not only abundant, but also very acidic. So it damages just about any surface it’s allowed to accumulate on. That absolutely includes your roof (tiles, shingles, foam, rolled, etc.) and solar panels. The solar boom has been good for just about everyone in the solar industry, but really good for our feral pigeon population!If you think like a pigeons for a minute, it makes a lot of sense. Pigeons are birds, after all, and birds like high places. Like roofs. And that just so happens to be where we have almost all of our solar panels installed. So it’s really the perfect storm, so to speak, for pigeons everywhere. Solar panels provide shade and protection from the elements and from predators. And there’s plenty of space under most solar panel arrays to raise a big, happy family.
Of course, pigeons poop constantly – no matter where they are. Including under your panels and on them when they roost, too. And since pigeon poop is so acidic, it eventually damages anything teat it is allowed to collect on. That certainly includes both the panels and the roof itself. The longer pigeons are allowed to nest under the panels – or anywhere on the roof – the more damage their feces causes.
So, how do we get rid of pigeons under solar panels? Here’s how:
- First, clean the area under and around the panels. You also want to spray the panels themselves off, too. Push any bird and/or pigeon nests out from under the panels, bag the mess up and put it in the trash can.
- Then, install a mesh that keeps the pigeons from accessing the protected area under the panels. It’s important to note that you should make this installation with out gluing or screwing the mesh to the actual panels. We see that all of the time and it will void the warranty on the panels.
