How do I get rid of Fruit Flies?
Have you had little flies or what you may think are gnats flying around your kitchen? If so, there's a good chance they may be fruit flies. Fruit flies are a real pain in the back side, buzzing around in your face and trying to fly up into your nose or ears. They want to eat your food and drink your beer and/or wine - like some in-laws:) They especially enjoy tomatoes, melons, bananas and other fresh produce and have the potential of contaminating the food you spent your hard earned money on. What a wonderful addition to any home or workplace. Although fruit flies are more of a nuisance than anything else, you probably want to get rid of them.
Here are a few tips on how to deal with a fruit fly problem:
- Let several bats cruise around your home. They love fruit flies.
- A shotgun. And a good drywall repairman afterwards.
- A regular, professional pest control service may help.
- Store produce in air-tight containers.
- Eat or dispose of produce before it gets over ripe.
- Fruit Fly Traps. They catch them and help you monitor the problem.
- They may get the food and water they need directly from your kitchen drains - especially the garbage disposal. Keeping the drains clean is essential.
The bottom line is that there's nothing positive about having fruit flies around. They can lay up to 500 eggs per week, so the sooner you get rid of them the better. Happy hunting!
