What is Pigeon Spike?
There are several different bird or pigeon spike products on the market. They come in a variety of different sizes and configurations and are generally made of either plastic, stainless steel or a combination of both. Readily available in hardware stores and online, pigeon spike is one of the most common pigeon control products out there. It's also one of the most mis-used products in the bird control world. Lots of so called 'pigeon control experts' glue some spike just about everywhere a pigeon roosts or nests. You wouldn't believe how much pigeon spike we've removed thru the years because it was simply not the right product for that situation or was installed incorrectly. One of the more common of these situations is where the 'experts' have glued pigeon spike around solar panels. That never works!
All pigeon spike products fall under the heading of 'ledge product'. If you choose the correct spike product for the given ledge it should work just about every time. We only use a stainless steel pigeon spike product because it looks much better than the plastic options and last much longer, too. It cost a bit more, but in the long run will save time, frustration and money. The ledge must be clean before installation and only a high quality silicone adhesive should be used (or screws if possible).
Pigeon spike does not generally work well on the roof or in the nooks that pigeons nest in. There are better products and installations available for those situations. Often a pigeon control job will require a combination of a few different products/installations to solve the problem. For the most part, if a pigeon control specialist is recommending spike for anything other than ledges, call someone else and get a second opinion. When pigeon spike is installed on a ledge it should come with a guarantee that pigeons will not be able to roost or nest on that surface for 5 years. And cleaning the target surface(s) should be included in the price. Pigeon poop usually stains any surface so touch-up paint may be necessary, too. I hope this information about pigeon spike is helpful. Don't hesitate to call or email if you have questions or need a free pigeon control quote. As usual: Happy Hunting!
