Here's The Deal:
Woodpeckers can do a lot of damage to your home or business in a relatively short period of time. And the longer they're there, the more stubborn they become. But they are federally protected, so you have to be careful about how you handle the problem
If they are pecking - or drilling - on your place, don't shoot. Get the right DIY supplies and get rid of woodpeckers - the sooner, the better.
Why Do You Have Woodpeckers On Your Home?
That’s the #1 question folks ask when they’re dealing with a woodpecker problem. There are a few different reasons why you may have woodpecker damage or woodpecker holes on your house:
1. They may be looking for something to eat. Woodpeckers eat lots of different insects with termites being one of their preferred meals. They are very good at finding these critters in walls, fence posts, telephone poles and trees. They often know that these critters are there before the home owner does.
2. They may be working on a nest. Though it's possible to find a woodpecker nest inside of the hole that they made in your wall, it's more common for them to extract the foam from behind the stucco to line a nest that’s located in a cactus or tree.
3. To sharpen their beak. Sometimes it’s as simple as just good old-fashioned maintenance.
4. Love! The male woodpecker needs to let all of the lady woodpeckers in the neighborhood know how awesome he is. One way to do that is to make a lot of noise. If you have a woodpecker pecking (called drumming) on something metal - like the spark arrestor on the top of your chimney - that's probably what’s going on.
Of course, then they ask how to get rid of woodpeckers. Woodpeckers can be an absolute nuisance, but more importantly they can be very expensive. The holes they make in your exterior walls can contribute to other problems. They make a great place for bees and other pests to set up shop. They also allow moisture to enter the wall void which can lead to a variety of other structural issues.
Woodpeckers are federally protected, which limits your woodpecker control and/or removal options. Luckily there are some safe, humane and legal IY solutions for your nuisance woodpecker problem. You'll wanna seal the holes up to keep moisture and other critters out and install woodpecker deterrents to gently and humanely persuade them to relocate.
So the next time you hear the Woodpecker song of love on your roof, don’t throw rocks at them (come on - you know you want to...). Get effective DIY Woodpecker Control solutions and send them packing.
Interesting Woodpecker Fact:
Woodpeckers have a specially developed long tongue which can be extended a considerable distance and is used most effectively to extract larvae, termites and ants from their burrows in wood or under bark.
